On grammar pedantry & swearing

Tuesday, 23 July 2013

Most people love a bit of Stephen Fry. Even if I don't always agree with his opinions, he often comes out with a lot of sense in intellectual matters. Having studied Literature for the last two years, particularly Shakespeare and a bit of the evolution from Old to Middle to Modern English, I've got a bit more of a real appreciation for language. I've been dipping in and out of Stephen Pinker's 'The Language Instinct' for a year or so, too, (I keep losing my copy) and find it fascinating. As much as I love 'correct' spelling and 'proper' grammar, I really love Stephen Fry's take on language. I also really love his take on swearing (best videos here and here). Language is beautiful and interesting and has so much potential, and I'm not ashamed to love it in the way that I love music or film or art. This video is a lovely bit of kinetic typography from Australia-based Matt Rogers (he's on twitter too, @RogersCreations)
