I love Eliot Rausch's work, and I was thrilled when this new film popped up on Vimeo. I posted about Last Minutes with Oden (and some others) a while back, and they're all amazing, but 'remember' is up there with 'Last Minutes' for me. Different stylistically, but so beautiful and heartbreaking and wonderful and a whole host of other adjectives.
Alzheimer's has to be one of the most destructive and awful of human diseases, and seeing the person you loved being robbed of their memories, of their being - or being robbed of them - is one of the worst things I can imagine. Louis Theroux's documentary on the topic was one of the most gut-wrenching things I've ever watched, and I admire every person who deals with the dreadful reality that is dementia. As the wonderful couple in Rausch's film say, we need to concentrate on the present and feel blessed for the time that we have together.
I'm going to make the most of being with my family this Christmas and I hope everyone else does too. If you feel like helping someone else's Christmas a little brighter, please consider donating or volunteering with charities like Age UK and Shelter - or even go and visit someone who might really appreciate it. No one should have to be alone, especially at Christmas.
